Overseen by the astute Colleen Buchanan, Scone's Sefton Park Thoroughbreds is always one of the stables at Riverside discerning buyers need to have on their lists. The farm's 2019 Inglis Classic Draft is a heady mixture of established sire strength blended with some new sire power to make this both a diverse and intriguing niche draft.
The first of two standouts in the draft of 6 are the colt by Rubick (sire so far of Yes Yes Yes, Biscay and Krameric) from Racer's Edge mare Edgeton (Lot 278). Already the dam of 3 individual winners, chief amongst these is the stakes-placed filly Umgeton (runner-up in the Listed Carlyon Stakes). This is a nice family that traces to Gr1 NZ Derby winner Zonda and 5-time Group winning mare Dixie Blossoms.
The second on any short list (and an outstanding type) is the colt by Alizee's sire Sepoy from Ad Valorem mare Graylight Girl (Lot 356). As a broodmare sire Ad Valorem hit the headlines last weekend as the damsire of Colts Preview winner I Am Immortal. Graylight Girl is a young mare and half-sister to Listed winner Bella Corona (dam of multiple stakes winner Bewhatyouwannabe).
Sepoy is also the sire of Lot 341, from Strada mare Gelsomina. Featuring a nice, sex-balanced duplication of breed shaper Danehill, Gelsomina is a half-sister to stakes-placed Brisbane gelding Kurtley. It's a page that also includes Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes winer Road To Success and, as a first foal, looms as potentially a canny investment that promises early speed.
To use a cricket analogy, another sire who's been putting some serious runs on the board over the past 12 months is Smart Missile with Gr1 winner Maid of Heaven and ill-fated Smart Melody chief amongst a host of stakes performers and promising gallopers. Lot 863 is from Lonhro mare Donnahro, a half-sister to stakes placed Snitzel filly Choice Snitzel. This is an athletic family and includes talented stakes winners like Yesterday, Donna Dior and Sebring Sally. Plus it just happens to the direct family of Corn (4th dam) and her brilliant clan of Maizcay, Fitting and Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Catbird.
Another with a clever Danehill duplication is Lot 880, the grey filly by dual Gr1 winner Hallowed Crown (oldest 2YOs) from Grey Countess. This is her first foal but it's a family that continues to produce quality performers; 3rd dam Dancefloor Doll (a Listed winner and 3rd in the Gr1 Wakeful of her year) sits on a page that also includes Gr1 Champagne Stakes winner Full And By.
Rounding out the Sefton Park Draft are two yearlings by first crop sires. Lot 852 is by Champion Singaporean 2YO and speed merchant Super One (by leading juvenile sire I Am Invincible) from Commands mare Crystal Diamonds. With 1 winner from 1 runner (interestingly by I Am Invincible), this is not only a cross that works but is a US family that boasts Champion Colt and Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Midshipman.
Meanwhile, Lot 874 is by another first crop yearling sire in Ready For Victory (a son of outstanding sire More Than Ready) from 12x winning mare Freetoair. Another with a 1 for 1 record so far, this colt traces to a host of US stakes-winners and Aus Gr1 winner Bellzevir. It's also the family of the breed-shaping sire Nijinsky.
