Queensland based Lucas Bloodstock is currently putting the finishing touches on a boutique Classic Draft of 4 yearlings which are as imposing physically as genetically. It’s a well-conceived, thoughtful draft that offers already commercial new sire strength and an established star.
Lot 97 is testament to utilising established data in mating a freshman sire for optimum success. This colt, by More Than Ready’s Champion Irish Miler and first crop yearling Sire, Verrazano, not only offers surety in a sire line that just works in Australia but clicks in to a cross that rarely fails. So far More Than Ready mares have been mated with Not A a Single Doubt 16 times for a super impressive 12 winners from 14 runners. It’s a combination that has a 28% SW/R ratio and includes the flying Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Miracles of Life. This particular colt is from Not a Single Doubt mare Doubtfilly, a 6-time winner, good enough to wine at Listed level and as 2YO to run 4th in the Gr1 Golden Slipper. And there’s also a very nice top and bottom duplication of Woodman.
The standard continues with Lot 193, this colt being by red hot first crop yearling sire Deep Field from Exceed and Excel mare Uncommon. Uncommon herself is a winning full-sister to Gr3 Maribyrnong Plate winner Exceedingly Good, runner-up also in the Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes. Deep Field has certainly penetrated the market if the recent Magic Millions on the Gold Coast is a barometer. There his yearlings sold at an average just north of $219,000 with a top price of $675,000 (the highest average of all first crop sires represented at the sale). Next up is the only filly in the Lucas Bloodstock draft. She’s by Global Glamour, Star Turn and Crown Witness’ sire, Star Witness, from Encosta de Lago mare Badabing Badaboom. Surely, she must be called Carmela Soprano. The dam is a half-sister to stakes-placed South African filly Princess Varunya. Most visible on the page, though, is million-dollar wining Gr1 VRC Derby star, Amalfi. Percentage wise, this filly is well placed with the cross having a 66% W/R strike rate so far.
The draft concludes on a strong note with a Dissident colt from Pentire mare In Masquerade, a stakes-placed half-sister to NZ Listed winner Celeris. Essentially, it’s a proven Swettenham family with third dam Loving Cup, a Listed Maribyrnong Trial winner and Gr1 Golden Slipper-placed filly. And Dissident also proved highly popular at the recent Magic Millions with a lofty average of $200,000 on 35 sold and with a top price of $525,000. Afterall, though, he boasts cracking yearlings and was Australian Horse of the Year.
