At Flemington in Melbourne, Cambridge Stud's dual Gr1-winning stallion Tavistock (Montjeu-Upstage, by Quest For Fame) celebrated an elite Gr1 success when 3YO colt Tarzino (Tavistock-Zarzino, by Zabeel) scored by 2-lengths for trainer Mick Price and jockey Craig Newitt in the $1.5 million Gr1 Victoria Derby (2500m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colt Etymology (New Approach-Weaver of Words, by Danehill) & 3YO gelding Kia Ora Koutou (Blackfriars-Kia Ora Miss, by Jeune). This was the first stakes victory for the very talented Tarzino who took his record to 3 wins and 2 placings (including the Gr2 Vase) from 6 starts for $1,006,050 earnings. Bred by Sir Patrick Hogan's Cambridge Stud in New Zealand, Tarzino was originally purchased for NZ$45,000 2014 NZB Select Yearling Sale by Rick Connolly Bloodstock before subsequently reoffered at the 2104 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale and purchased by Mick Price Racing for $60,000. Price was already making plans for next year with his outstanding colt, saying Tarzino would be entered in all the majors, including the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup. "I think that he is a really good horse with a lot of capacity to him," Price told Racing.com. "He can go to the paddock and I think he is going to make a weight-for-age horse in the autumn. He will have a light autumn and then make a good four-year-old." He added: "You'll see him (next year) in a Cox Plate, you'll see him in a Melbourne Cup, he's a really good horse." Tarzino is out of the Zabeel mare Zarzino and descends from the same female line as three-time Gr1-winning stallion Sky Chase, sire of 1996 Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate winner Saintly.
