At Flemington in Melbourne, multiple Gr1-winning shuttler & former star Australian sprinter Choisir (Danehill Dancer-Great Selection, by Lunchtime) celebrated an elite Gr1 success when 3YO gelding Japonisme (Choisir-Haiku, by Encosta de Lago) scored an upset 1.5-length win for trainer Chris Waller in the $500,000 Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO geldings Keen Array (Bel Esprit-Moorea, by Zabeel) & Counterattack (Redoute's Choice-Kisma, by Snippets). Japonisme took his record to 5 wins (including the Gr3 San Domenico Stakes) and 3 placings (including the Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes) from 10 starts for $600,615 earnings. A homebred for the Ingham family, Japonisme is out of the Encosta de Lago mare Haiku and hails from the family of New Zealand Oaks winner Tapildo and Gr2 Silver Slipper Stakes winner Plagiarize. Waller said Japonisme's victory was all the more special because of his close association with the Ingham family. "It's my first Group 1 win for the Inghams, which is very special," Waller told Ra cing.com. "The owners also knocked back a sizeable amount of money - I put myself on the line and said he was a Group 1 horse." He added: "We never built ourselves up because we've got so much respect for Exosphere. It was a great ride, it was a patient ride and we got a great result." Waller said Japonisme would now go for a well deserved spell before returning for the feature sprints in the autumn. "He'll go out and we'll do what we did with Brazen Beau last year and have a crack at the Newmarket (Gr1 Newmarket Handicap)," he said.
