Nestled in the picturesque northeast of Victoria, Phoenix Broodmare Farm specialises in the full gamut of equine care and management. It also consistently delivers a high calibre draft of yearlings year on year to the Melbourne Premier Sale. 2018 is certainly no different.

Headlining the 2017 Phoenix Broodmare draft was outstanding filly and current equal Blue Diamond favourite Kinky Boom.

Moving to 2018 and first up you have to seriously consider Lot 509, the Kuroshio half-brother to triple Gr1 winner Le Romain. A son of exceptional sire and dynamic speed influence Exceed and Excel, Kuroshio’s eldest are only 2YOs and promise precociousness. Kuroshio was talented enough to take a Gr3 Blue Diamond Prelude. This family also includes Listed Gosford Guineas winner and dual Gr3 placed gelding Pursuits.

Dundeel’s eldest are also only 2YO’s but have already shown considerable talent in trials. Lot 172 is the colt by Dundeel from Danehill Dancer mare Swan River, a sister to Gr2 Alister Clark winner Lieutenant. With 3 to race for 2 winners, including SA metro winner Beau Rivage, this appears to be a mating that beckons early speed but promises to train on and extend in distance to at least a mile.

Northern Meteor’s speedy son Fighting Sun had a boom on him from day 1 and looks to have passed his innate class and good looks onto his progeny, also only 2YO’s. Lot 613 should fly. He’s from an Exceed and Excel mare from a Gold Brose mare who’s a sister to Gr3 Frances Tressady winner Demographic. And the family traces to both Gr1 Australia Stakes winner Bomber Bill and Listed winning sprinter Specialize.

Lot 400 is by first crop yearling sire and Gr1 Cox Plate winner Adelaide. He’s from a stakes-placed Bianconi mare and winner of 6 in Gail. A winning family that includes Listed Quezette winner Elite Elle.

Another first cropper represented is Hallowed Crown and his colt from Helluva Party (Lot 416). The mare has already had considerable success and boasts the perfect strike-rate with 4 winners from 4 runners. Listed placed Sebring filly Australia Day is amongst these. Second dam Formal Invitation is prolific with a rich stakeswinning cluster of performers including dual Gr1 winner Kermadec and Gr3 winner Triple Elegance.

Redoute’s Choice’s Gr1 winning son Hampton Court is represented by Lot 411, the filly from US bred Gr2 placed mare Gripsholm Castle. Second dam Randaroo won 8 and was good enough at Gr2 level at Aqueduct.

Redwood is a sire that perhaps flies under the radar slightly but has the capacity to produce a serious horse at a middle distance and beyond. Darren Weir-trained Night’s Watch, for instance, certainly appears to have the capacity to win at black type level in the near future. Lot 507 is the colt from Choisir mare Merci Grand. A sister to a pair stakes-placed 1200m to 1600m winners, this family is bolstered by St Klaire and her prodigious brood of Gr1 winners including Bonanova, Fraternity and Telesto.

Lot 290 is another from the Elite Elle family, this time by The Quaterback’s sire in Street Boss, while Lot 511 shines as the colt by top end NZ sire Tavistock from the family of Our Tristalight.

The Phoenix Broodmare draft is also represented by 4 yearlings by Gr1 Blue Diamond winner and leading speed influence Reward For Effort. Lot 592 is from the family of triple Gr1 winner Drawn, as is Lot 732, 733 and 770.
