The Victorian breeding scene has seen a huge investment in stallion power over recent years, and this mirrors the growth of the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale over the same time period. Last year’s exciting freshman sire Brazen Beau (who stands at Darley’s Northwood Park in Victoria) already has 2YO stakes-winner Accession, stakes-placed First Dawn, and Golden Slipper favourite Tassort. The success of other young stallions, such as Zoustar (who initially shared his southern hemisphere seasons between Victoria’s Woodside Park, and NSW’s Widden Stud), and Queensland’s Better than Ready, will mean that buyers are always attracted to the stock of the first season sires each year.
In 2019, there are 22 first season sires represented at the Inglis Melbourne Yearling Sale catalogue.
English Two Thousand Guineas winner Night of Thunder (Dubawi) shuttled to Darley’s Northwood Park in Victoria, and is represented in the 2019 Melbourne Premier Sale by fourteen yearlings including Lot 102, a colt out of a young winning half-sister to Gr2 winner Tropical Lady (dam of Gr3 winner Ellthea), while Lot 8 is a colt out of a half-sister to Gr1 winning sprinter Devil Moon. Lot 387 is a colt out of a half-sister to Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready, while Lot 606 is a colt out of stakes-placed winner Feerique, who is a daughter of Listed winner All The Rave. Out of a winning half-sister to Gr1 winner Light Jig, Lot 676 is a colt with a strong international family. Lot 754 is a filly out of a winning daughter of Gr2 winner Ateates.
Rosemont Stud stands Gr3 Gold Coast Guineas winner Nostradamus (Medaglia d’Oro), and he has eleven yearlings from his first crop at the 2019 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale. Gr3-placed winner Soho Ruby’s half-sister is Lot 406, and this is the family of Gr1 winner Knowledge. Lot 511 is a filly out of seven-race winner (and Gr3-placed) Two Sugars, while Lot 512 is a half-brother to Listed winner Le Remas. Lot 783 is a half-brother of stakes-placed sprinter Tricky Tricky from the family of group winner Apple Danish.
Sun Stud’s stakes winning-juvenile Ready for Victory (More than Ready) will be looking to bounce off the success of fellow More Than Ready sire Better Than Ready, and has nine yearlings in this sale, headlined by a three-quarter-sister to Listed winner Tropic Thunder (Lot 689). A colt from Gr2 winner Sherine is Lot 447, while Lot 330 is a colt who is the first foal of a daughter of stakes-winner Homerette. Lot 579 is a filly out of a half-sister to Primus, from the Joie Denise family, while Lot 645 is a colt from the family of Champion 2YO Earthquake.
Gr2 winner Rich Enuff (Written Tycoon, whose progeny were very well received at earlier yearling sales in 2019, stands at Woodside Park, and he has seven yearlings on offer here. A three-quarter-sister to It Is Written is Lot 273, out of a winning half-sister to the Written Tycoon stakes-winner. A half-brother to stakes winner (of 14 races) Little Brown Horse is Lot 421, while Lot 555 is a filly out of a winning half-sister to Gr2 winner Tickle My.
Dual Gr1 winner Trust in a Gust, meanwhile, who stands at Swettenham Stud, has six yearlings catalogued in the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale, including Lot 669, a colt out of a winning half-sister to Gr2 winner Domesky. Lot 692 is a filly out of a nine-race winner from the family of Montana Flyer, while Lot 701 is a filly out of a daughter of Gr1 winner Not Related.
