Edinburgh Park
Lot 323 is closely related to champion Criterion (pic: Mark Gatt)

A thoroughly modern boutique thoroughbred stud on the rich alluvial flats of the Manning River, the roll call for Edinburgh Park Stud sits proudly alongside any rival establishment in Australasia. Amovatio, Sister Madly, Bull Point, Cute Emily, Better Than Ready, Tahni Dancer, A Country Girl, Rocketeer, Revolving Door, Golden Spin, Permissive, Miss Wonderland are all recent stakes performers from a property that continues to produce elite racing graduates.

Its 2018 Magic Millions draft is small in size but big on quality, and more importantly, for a sale with so many residual race series benefits, very big on precocity.

Lot 323 opens the Edinburgh Park account, a colt by the all-conquering dual Champion Sire Fastnet Rock. A progressive and contemporary family, this is the second foal of US-bred Smoke Glacken mare and six-time winner, Smokin’ Alice. From an Australian perspective, the pedigree includes one of the most high-caliber gallopers of recent times in triple Gr1 winner Criterion (from prolific stakes producing mare Mica’s Pride), dam also of Gr2 winner Varenna Miss and Gr3- winning, Gr1-placed Comin’ Through (interestingly also by Fastnet Rock). It’s also the distaff line of Gr1 Golden Rose placed Bull Point (Fastnet Rock), while also including talented stakes placed filly Miss Wonderland.

Lot 540 is a colt by Shooting To Win, winner of the prestigious Gr1 Caulfield Guineas and following in the footsteps of fellow winners and successful sires including All Too Hard, Lonhro and Redoute’s Choice. He is from stakes-winning, Gr1 Queensland Oaks runner-up Becerra, her first foal already a winning 2YO. This is the athletic family of not only Gr1 South Australian Oaks winner Episode but also the electrifying First Seal, Gr1 Flight Stakes winner and rated Champion Female Sprinter in Australia in 2015-2016.

Lot 699 is by another hot first season sire in Rubick, the highest rated 2YO of his generation with a pedigree that surpasses most. By Champion Sire Encosta de Lago, Rubick’s dam is a three-quarter sister to another Champion Sire in Redoute’s Choice. This colt descends from the equally royal family of Eau D’Etoile and a host of household names such as Bint Marscay, Boillinger, Mannington, Filante, Kenny’s Best Pal and Stella Cadente.

The final offering (Lot 740) in this upmarket draft is the filly by Fastnet Rock’s son Smart Missile, the Leading Australian First Season Sire of 2015-2016 who is going from strength to strength. She is out of speedy, stakes-placed General Nediym mare Fortune of War, half-sister to Gr2-winning, Gr1-placed Sertorius, and already the producer of Gr3-placed filly Spoils. This is a family whose progeny typically display early talent yet have the capacity to maintain top end ability across multiple campaigns, years and distance ranges. And the residual value is high and untapped.
