At Riccarton in New Zealand, NZ-based Rich Hill Stud stallion Pentire (Be My Guest-Gull Nook, by Mill Reef) celebrated an elite Gr1 success when 3YO colt Xtravagant (Pentire-Axiom, by Zabeel) scored a stunning 8.5-length win for trainers Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards in the NZ$400,000 Gr1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colt Battle Time (Battle Paint-Lady of Oakview, by Diamond Express) & 3YO filly Serena Miss (Iffraaj-Gifted Lass, by More Than Ready). Xtravagant completed a memorable Gr1 double for Rich Hill Stud's foundation sire Pentire following the win of Prince Of Penzance in last Tuesday's Melbourne Cup. "It's a massive buzz and we didn't expect him to do it like that," co-trainer Jamie Richards told NZ Racing Desk. "We thought he had improved since Wellington and the Te Akau model of getting them down here early has worked again – he's an outstanding colt." Jockey Matt Cameron added: "He was just humming along and he was way too good for them," he said. "It was incredible." By Pentire out of the unraced Zabeel mare Axiom, Xtravagant is a sibling to multiple Gr1 performer and NZ 2,000 Guineas runner-up He's Remarkable and was purchased by Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis for NZ$375,000 from the draft of Rich Hill Stud at last year's NZB Premier Yearling Sale. Xtravagant took his record to 3 wins from 5 starts for NZ$258,000 earnings.
