At Flemington in Melbourne, European champion 4-time Gr1-winning former Darley shuttler Shamardal (Giant's Causeway-Helsinki, by Machiavellian) celebrated an elite Gr1 success when 4YO gelding Delectation (Shamardal-Grace and Power, by More Than Ready) scored by 0.1-length for trainer Chris Waller in the $1 million Gr1 Darley Classic (1200m) for 3YO+, over 5YO gelding Chautauqua (Encosta de Lago-Lovely Jubly, by Lion Hunter) & 6YO gelding Terravista (Captain Rio-Parfore, by Gold Brose). Waller said Delectation could have earned himself a trip to Royal Ascot next year after proving he was right up there with Australia's best sprinters. "I want to take a horse to Ascot again," Waller told Racing.com. "We'll go back with the horse we think is best suited to that race - whether it be Delectation, Japonisme, Press Statement...I'm not sure who it will be, but we'll be taking one that's for sure." A $250,000 yearling consigned by Vinery Stud at the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Delectation took his record to 5 wins (including the Gr2 ATC Royal Sovereign Stakes) and 7 placings (including the Gr1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes, Gr3 Eskimo Prince Stakes, Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes & Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes) from 20 starts for $1,423,775 earnings.
