Stratum Star (AUS)
Dual Gr1 winner Stratum Star

(Stratum-Purely Spectacular, by Pins)
Stands 2017 at Widden Stud, NSW, for $11,000

Stratum Star – a Gr1 winning sprinter by a Golden Slipper winner – presents a solid opportunity for breeders who have a need for speed, and want soundness thrown in as well. The early loss of Stratum was a blow for Widden, with the Golden Slipper winner leaving a Golden Slipper winner (Crystal Lily) among his 34 stakes winners.

Widden have found a strong replacement in his son, Stratum Star, who proved to be one of the best sprinters in the nation with his dual Gr1 victories in Perth and Victoria.

While he really started to hit his straps as a 3YO, Stratum Star’s connections had great faith in his ability early. As a 2YO he had four starts, three in group company. He lived up to that promise early as a 3YO with dual Listed wins in the early spring carnival, then he was again thrown at the best company. Between November and March, Stratum Star ran six group placing against several Gr1 winners – frustrating, but promising. And all the promise came to fruition in September of his 4YO season when he won the Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, as well as placing in the Gr1 Memsie and Gr1 Toorak Handicap.

Several more group placings, and in his 5YO season, the consistent Stratum Star went to Perth for the Gr1 Kingstown Town Classic, which he won. Back to Queensland, he won a Magic Millions race, then returned to Victoria for victory in the Gr2 Peter Young Stakes. Stratum Star travelled, he raced every season for four seasons, and he won at the highest level. This is a serious racehorse.

By Stratum, Stratum Star is from Purely Spectacular, a Pins mare who is a half sister to Listed winner Raid. This is the famous Emancipation family – and her descendants include her group winning and AJC Derby placed son Royal Pardon, as well as Gr1 winners Railings, Virage de Fortune, Rumya, and many other group winners to boot.

For a tough sprinter who could travel, Stratum Star is a superb option.
