The Macquarie Stud
The Macquarie Stud has been breeding commercially since the 1960s

Set on the outskirts of Wellington in picturesque Central NSW, The Macquarie Stud is topographically perfect for the spelling of mares and the raising and education of foals from birth to the racetrack.

The property consists of a sprawling 3,000 acres of hills and flats, with its pasture fed by a five-mile frontage to the winding Macquarie River. The stud is divided into 16 major paddocks ranging from one to four acres. It has been purpose-built to maximise both the levels of quality and safety for spellers, agisting mares and foals. Best practice and premium results are always top of mind.

The stud’s impressive tally of infrastructure includes 4 houses, 4 blocks and stables (comprising 40 boxes), multiple small yards and round yards, 4 acres of floodlit foaling paddocks, storage for 250 tonne of grain and 300,000 bales of hay, 5000 megalitre irrigation licence, 2600 metres of fully irrigated and railed racetrack and wooden, electrified fencing.

Owned and operated by the Baxter family, The Macquarie Stud boasts a proud and extensive commercial reign, having raised and marketed yearlings since the late 1960’s. And the property has been developed over this period to be able to cater expertly to all facets and stages of the thoroughbred experience and level of development.

Both short and long term spelling facilities are a key component to the stud’s business model, and supported by state of the art broodmare, foal, weanling and yearling facilities. The agistment experience is supported by round-the-clock veterinary care and personalised transport.

The mantra of The Macquarie Stud is having “the facilities to take your foal from birth to the race track.” This capacity and inbuilt adaptability offers equal flexibility to clients and potential new clients. Whether it’s long term agistment, shorter term agistment through to foaling, early education to a yearling preparation to sale, or on another tangent to the racetrack, The Macquarie Stud truly is the railway line with many stops and first class carriages.

Under the direction of General Manager, David Baxter, who joined The Macquarie Stud in 1975, Mark Lousick controls day-to-day operations as Stud Manager and has been a central spoke to the wheel since 1980. Simon Baxter enters his fourth year as part of the team, after growing up on the stud and since gaining world-class experience in Ireland, England, USA, South America, New Zealand, as well as Darley Stud in Australia. Rounding out the key personnel is Jason Lay, a 25-year part of the outfit and specialising in reproduction. His extensive experience extends to spending three seasons on the all-conquering Shadai Farm in Japan.
